All parents and children are welcome every Sunday, at the Parish Mass here at St. Philip’s and the children are welcome to go into the Sunday school during the first part of the service.
On Mothering Sunday (or Refreshment or Mid-lent Sunday) the children receive a bunch of flowers at the altar to give to their mothers. This commemorates the old tradition in our country, that young workers and apprentices were allowed to go home to see their families on this Sunday. As they went they picked flowers from the hedgerows for their mothers.
The theme, of the Liturgy, however, on this mid-Lent Sunday, is the Baptismal journey of all Christians to Easter. As we hear in today’s Gospel: by healing the man born blind, Our Lord reveals himself as the Light of the World.
Light is one of a range of symbols of Baptism, the Sacrament that immerses us believers in the mystery of the death and resurrection of Christ which is made real for us at Easter.
